Spain: Lower vegetable prices in Murcia

Higher temperatures than usual have been registered during January and February in Murcia, Spain, accompanied by ideal weather conditions for the vegetable campaign. "At the moment the plantations are almost back to full activity and many kilos are being harvested, but we have yet to make up for the losses we had early in the campaign," explains Thomas Andersson, Commercial Director of UNEXPORT.

If we compare this year's results with the 2011/2012 campaign, the main difference is the lower production registered to date, mainly due to the late September floods. These caused the loss of 3,000 hectares of vegetables, 40% of the entire production from October to December," says Thomas. Furthermore, "the products that survived the rains were of poor quality."

Lower production volumes shot the prices up until late December. However, the current situation is of oversupply, causing the prices of broccoli, lettuce, tomato and other Murcian vegetables to plunge.

Thomas has good expectations for this campaign, as the revenue so far is better than last year's and production is slowly recovering.

Based in Lorca, Murcia, UNEXPORT is the union of 16 partners specialised in the growing of vegetables, greens, citrus, melon and watermelon with the goal of trading with the most demanding markets in terms of quality.

UNEXPORT's main export markets are Germany, France and Eastern Europe, as well as Russia, which is an "interesting market because they pay good prices for quality products, despite occasionally encountering problems with the payments," explains Thomas.

UNEXPORT participated once again as an exhibitor at the recent edition of Fruit Logistica, Berlin. The firm sought to consolidate and expand in new markets. "We are particularly interested in entering the U.S. and the Middle East and we are ready to make air shipments," added Diego Díaz, President of UNEXPORT.

Both Diego Díaz and Thomas Andersson agree that the experience and results obtained from Fruit Logistica have been very positive. "It is true that there were fewer visitors this year, but they were more interesting, all being agricultural trade specialists. Not much time was wasted."
