India: New fruit and vegetable processing facility to handle 13,000 tons

A proposed mango hub at Dhenkanal, at an estimated cost of Rs 11 crore, will have a total vegetable and fruits output of 1,556 tonnes in the first year.

According to the project report, within 10 years output will reach 13,482 tonnes. Formation of a company, Dhenkanal Fruits and Vegetables Marketing Company Ltd. has been proposed to operate the hub. Costs of the project are to be covered by the growers, State Government and Central Government combined.

The hub will have farm level collection system, market yards, dedicated pack house, cold storages, ripening chambers and processing facilities and will cover Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Keconjhar and Cuttack.

A mixture of produce will be handled at the site, though mango will be prominent.

Revenue will be generated via value addition to produce and the renting out of storage and marketing space. Payback on the investment outlay has been estimated at 5-6 years.
