Malaysia: Pineapple industry confident of revival

The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board is confident of reviving the flagging pineapple industry especially in Sarawak following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Syngenta.

Chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the MoU would facilitate efforts to step up development and technical services, technology sharing and expertise in creating potential areas for pineapple cultivation and pineapple-based food products.

"Overall, 15,000 hectares has been cultivated nationwide and 600 hectares in Sarawak has been identified for pineapple farming," he told reporters after the signing ceremony.

Hasni said revenue from the pineapple trade only amounted to RM60 million ($19,300,000 US), which was considerably low.
