Trees: tree cultivator René Nicolaï, Sales: D&G and LTV
Belgium: Official presentation of Regal Red Comice
"In the next few years more and more new trees will be planted in Belgium and Holland," he continues. "The trees are exclusively available from us and the pack-out for the growers is 100%. We will keep up with the demand. We can follow it precisely, as everything happens in a closed chain concept. In the coming years we will work towards a volume of 2 million kilos."
David Bamps, owner of D&G Fruit is very happy that he will be marketing Regal Red. "We are also the exclusive suppliers of the successful apple variety Evelina so that means we now have two nice club varieties. We expect this new pear variety to do well in the market and we are not ruling out adding other new varieties to our assortments."
D&G Fruit sold the pears to wholesaler Euro Gijbels, who ensured Regal Red was in Carrefour's supermarket shelves first. "We're happy to be able to offer the consumer the new Red Comice pear this year," says Jos Heeren of Euro Gijbels.
Regal Red is a red mutation of Doyenne du Comice. The appearance of the pear is like wine red and the flavour is similar to that of the Comice. The combination of taste and the striking red colour are Regal Red's aces. The trees are exclusively marketed in collaboration with Tree cultivator René Nicolaï. The commercialisation will take place exclusively through D&G Fruit and LTV (The Limburgse Tuinbouwveiling, Herk-de-Stad), who will collaborate closely.
