UK: Aldi expanding in Scotland

Competition amongst supermarket chains in Scotland looks set to intensify next year with Aldi planning opens a further six stores, taking its total north of the border to 50.

Inverness looks likely to be a key battleground, with Aldi planning to open its second branch in the Highland capital late next year. The city is also home to rival supermarket Lidl. Other towns being targeted by Aldi are East Kilbride, Falkirk, Leven, Motherwell and Paisley.

Aldi buying director Michael Whiteford said that 25% of the chain's core range is now sourced from Scottish suppliers and that he hopes to stock a wider range of home-grown products once the chain has expanded.

Aldi recently revealed expansion plans that could see it double its UK stores over the next 10 years. Aldi opened 29 stores in 2011 and completed a major store refurbishment programme. It plans to invest £180m opening 40 new stores by the end of 2013, taking its estate to more than 500 UK stores.
