UK: October retail figures show fall

The British Retail Consortium's monthly retail sales monitor showed same-store sales fell 0.1% on the year in October while total sales -which include sales made at newly built or opened stores -rose 1.1% over the same period.

In September, same-store sales rose 1.5% on the year and total sales grew 3.4%.

"Unfortunately it looks like the modest sales revival we saw in September was something of a false dawn," said BRC director general Stephen Robertson.

Food and drink sales picked up slightly at the end of October, but were not strong the rest of the month.

"The recession may officially be over but it will take a little longer for consumers to feel they can spend freely again," said David McCorquodale, Head of Retail at KPMG, who jointly compiles the monthly survey with the BRC.
