Tawian: Apples, nectarines and kiwis drop in price

Apples imported into Taiwan are being sold from this week after a recent reduction in import duties, said Vice Premier, Jiang Yi-huah. Amongst the affected produce are apples - down 12.3%, nectarines - down 14.2% and and kiwifruit - down3.8%.

The average price of fruit at wholesale is NT$39.4 per kg, reduced from NT$46.2 just two weeks ago.

The reduction in price comes about as a result of a 50% drop in import duties for these three types of fruit. The measure was taken by the government and commenced on October 5th. It is temporary measure aimed at dropping fruit prices for a time.

Jiang says this is designed to help lessen the financial burden felt by consumers.

The Council of Agriculture says major retailers have lowered their prices in response to the new rates.

RT-Mart, for example, has reduced its apple prices by 8-10% and kiwifruits by as much as 20%. Carrefour, meanwhile, has reduced its apples by 9%.

Taiwan Fresh Supermarket has dropped the apple price by 4-6% and kiwifruit to 7%.
Apples, nectarines and kiwi fruits being sold at Pxmart are now priced 7 percent, 2.5 percent and 15 percent lower.
