Jos Craemers. Veiling Borgloon:

"Belgium: "We enter the top fruit season in a positive mood"

The top fruit season is in full swing and at Veiling Borgloon considerable numbers are being supplied. "However, volumes are still less than expected. Pears have all been harvested and apples will also have been done soon. The first and second pickings of apples were ideal. The apples had a good colour. Weather conditions were not as good the last few days, but now the sun shines again. It is expected that 80% of the apples will have been harvested at the end of the week.

"Prices of the top fruit are at a first class level. Pears have slowly increased in price and are sold on average at 60 to 70 cents. The price of apples is about 50 cents and that is also good. We enter the season in a positive mood and that is how it should be after last year. Some complain about producer Poland, but their quality is not as good and mainly for processing. 35 cents for the fresh market and 25 cents for processing, that is a good basis for the market in Europe. "

In addition to top fruit Veiling Borgloon also still market soft fruit, such as blackberries and redcurrants. "This is going quite well. Strawberries are low in volume now. Supply is still about 30 to 40 tons per day and trading is difficult. Supply and demand are no longer balanced."
