UK: Tesco to deploy more scan-as-you-shop
The portable scanning system was piloted in 60 stores, with plans to expand to another 40 before Christmas. Tesco was initially hesitant at a large-scale launch of the system due to fears of an increase of theft, but after working with the electronic tagging company Checkpoint Systems to provide security tags, confidence got a boost.
The mobile scanners read barcodes on the products and have proved to be a hit with children who enjoy helping their parents shop, the article said.
"Customer feedback is extremely positive, with the main benefits quoted as being convenience, time saved, ability to track spend and not having to queue at the checkouts," a Tesco spokeswoman said.
