Pak-Indonesia PTA to boost kinnow export

The Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) signed earlier this year between Pakistan and Indonesia is expected to boost export of kinnows. The agreement has reduced the tariff rate for kinnows from 25 percent to zero tariff. Under the PTA, special market access at reduced rates to 220 tariff lines including ASEAN treatment of end rate of 5 percent to 27 products and zero duty to 94 products, besides agricultural products and kinnow. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Ministry of Commerce will grant the special waivers specifically for Indonesia export in the form of tax and logistics’ tariff to compete with Chinese product. By 2005, Pakistan exported kinnow worth $10 million.

Similarly Indonesia eliminate tariff in grapefruits, lemons, grapes, peaches, dates, apples and apricots from Pakistan. From the end of next month China will give Pakistan tough time in Indonesian market interims of price, but in taste our product is far better than Chinese Mandarin. The Pakistan Horticulture and Development and Export Company should hold a kinnow exhibition in December in Jakarta, so that Indonesian buyers would welcome properly our product. Serious efforts should be started from now with the help of Pakistani High Commission. By adopting proper marketing strategy for the next three years, major chunk from set export target of kinnow in Indonesia market can be achieved.

Ahmad Jawad an exporter said Indonesia the world 4th largest populated country is a lucrative market for Pakistani fruits especially in kinnow. After 2005 to till date China successfully tape Indonesian market in mandarin oranges. He urged the private sector of both countries to get excellent benefit from the agreement as well as we required support of our respective commercial counselors for better promotion on yearly basis.
