US: Dole begins payment to former banana workers

Dole has commenced payment of its settlement to 5,000 former banana workers from Central America, who sued the company over pesticide exposure.

The agreement, as reported last week, see the end of 38 lawsuits filed in the US and Nicaragua.

The complaints related to allegations that pesticide exposure during the 1970s lead to infertility in male workers.

The terminated lawsuits included two Nicaraguan judgments totaling $907.5 million.

The settlement covers 3,157 Nicaraguans, 780 Costa Ricans and 1,000 Hondurans who worked for Dole during the period from 1973 to 1980.
