UK: Tesco to stock hottest pepper

Tesco has begun stocking what claims to be the UK’s hottest commercially grown chilli pepper, the Bedfordshire Super Naga. The pepper has been produced by Bedfordshire farmer Salvatore Genovese, who last year launched the Bhut Jolokia pepper, which is 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce. The Super Naga (90p for 15gm packet) has a reading of 1.12 million Scoville units, topping even the Bhut Jolokia, which had a reading of just over one million Scovilles.

Tesco noted: “Chilli fans will love the Bedfordshire Super Naga as it has a wonderful fruity flavour to match its searing heat level. The heat builds slowly allowing you to savour the full flavour. It’s very deceptive because it takes a good 30 seconds for the heat to really start working and then it continues to build for a few minutes. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted and should be tasted with extreme caution.”
