Spain: Super Fruta y Verdura introducing Asian products to Europe

Located in Malaga, Spain, the firm Super Fruta y Verdura specialises in the sale of 60 different types of Asian fruit, vegetables and tubers, both directly imported and produced in Spain, where they have 12 associated farms dedicated to the production of Asian products, a 1000 square metre warehouse and a 400 square metre refrigerated warehouse with four chambers.

Among the wide variety of exotic Asian fruits, we find Asian Pears (5 varieties), durian, mangosteen, jujube, lychee, Chinese blackberry, etc. The vegetables on offer include Chinese cabbage, pak choi, Chinese long bean, green chilli, luffa, xian choi, choi xin and pu gua (pumpkin violin), among others. Also bamboo, ginger, shiitake, eringii and enokii mushrooms, etc.

In Europe there is increasing demand for Asian products, especially due to immigration, but also to their introduction to the European palate.

"Our main customers are Asian immigrants living in Europe, who are the most familiar with those products," explains Wang Weiyi, from Super Fruta y Verdura. "Our goal is to add variety to the European market, attracting also non-immigrant customers."

Currently 5 containers are being imported monthly, and 5 to 10 trucks monthly are being produced in Spain.

"We are also shipping lychee from the Guai Mei and Mautisius varieties from our farm in Malaga, as well as jujube to countries such as Portugal, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, etc."

"The firm has already been successful with ginger, Chinese cabbage and Korean mushrooms due to their characteristic flavour and health properties."

They also export European products to the Asian market. "We have shipped Spanish mangoes and Valle del Jerte cherries to Hong Kong, and via Hong Kong we sell to China," concluded Wang.
