According to the latest figures reported by FruitImprese , in the first five months of 2012, exports were slightly up and imports down.
In terms of value both imports and exports are down. Yet the balance is about 367 millions of Euro, 19.4% higher than in the same period of 2011.
From January to May 2012 the total export of fruit and vegetables amounted to 1.7 millions of tons (+1.1%) for a value of 1.556 billions of Euro (-6.2%). The export of vegetables (+2.5%) , fresh fruits (+4.8%) and dry fruits (+2.7%) are all up; citrus exports are down (-11%). In terms of value, every category recorded a contraction, except for dry fruits (+21.5%).

In the same period Italy imported about 1.480 million tons (-3.2%) for a value of 1.190 billions of Euro (-12%). Among categories the only increase in volumes is for citrus (+34%); for the others the trend is negative: vegetables (-1.6%), fresh fruit (-21.1%), dry fruit (-20.7%) and tropical fruit (-5.9%). In terms of value, there is a negative sign for every category except for citrus (+25.1%).
