Auchan expands International reach

French retailer Auchan is to expand its presence into the Indian market.Auchan It has been announced that the group will operate franchised hypermarkets in India with Max Hypermarkets India, which is part of Dubai-based Landmark Group.

All stores will be rebranded with the 'Auchan' banner by the fourth quarter of the year and it has been reported that there are plans to open 12-15 new stores across India in the coming year.

Philippe Baroukh, general manager for Auchan's hypermarket division, said, "We share with Max Hypermarket, a renowned retailer operator in India, the same vision of business and look forward to sharing our know-how to foster the development of its hypermarkets under our brand. We consider this new franchise partnership in India as a great opportunity for Auchan to enhance its brand on a very high potential market, characterized by dynamism and a strong economic growth."

Auchan is the 12th largest food retailer in world. Under the control of the Mulliez family, the group operates hypermarkets in 12 countries, employing 235,000 people. Last year the group's hypermarket division made up 79.7 per cent of turnover, with consolidated net sales of €35.4 billion. Aside from its native France, Auchan also has operations in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, China and Taiwan, among others.

Max Hypermarkets currently operates 13 hypermarkets in India and is a segment of the Landmark Group, a retail and hospitality conglomerate. The group operates over 1,300 outlets in countries inlcuding Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, and Libya, employing over 40,000 people.
