Producers of fresh produce in Almeria, Spain have exported 1.2 million tons in the first semester of this year, a historical record. Sales increased with 1.1 billion Euro, an 8% rise compared to last year.
According to the latest data from the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (Icex), Almeria is now the biggest distributor of fresh produce in Spain, followed by Murcia and Valencia.
In June there were almost 22,000 commercial transactions, distributing over a million tons of fresh vegetables with a value of over a billion Euro. In May and June, the export of vegetables did exceptionally well. High rollers were the tomatoes (23.1%), paprika (18.6%) and cucumbers (8.2%).
208,000 tons of fruit was exported, mostly melons and watermelons, a number comparable to the first half of last year.
As for the destination: 29% of the Almeria produce went to Germany, 15% to France, 12.7% to Holland, and 12.7% to other countries.
