Spain: PSOE protects Canary Islands banana in EU - US agreements

PSOE introduced several changes in the safeguard clauses and stabilization mechanisms for the banana in the association agreement between EU and Central America and in the free trade agreement with Colombia and Peru, that protects Canary Islands banana producers.

That's what Juan Fernando López Aguilar, socialist euro-deputy, affirmed while giving positive value to the approval of this, since it "defends a sector that gives work to thousands of people."

With the changes made by the socialist group, the report approved today in the commission for International Commerce allowed to reflect on the need for safeguard mechanisms that avoid serious damages to European cultivations of banana against imports from third party countries, with the end result of assuring that banana production in the EU is kept in the best possible conditions.

For that, the socialist Euro-MP Josefa Andrés defended in her interventions and changes that when banana imports grow the tariff exceptions must be suspended automatically, as pointed by PSOE in a statement.
