Germany: Lower Saxony strawberry federal state No: 1

According to information from the federal state company for statistics and communication technology Niedersachsen (LSKN) open ground strawberries were grown in the whole of Germany on 13,488 HA during 2011. 23.4% of this area was in Lower Saxony, with which the federal state had the biggest area of all German federal states.
 
The total harvest in Germany amounted to 45,680 tons and with this Lower Saxony was again at the top with a share of 26.2% of the total harvest. The area used in Lower Saxony for open ground cultivation of strawberries has more than trebled in size since 1997. At that time the area was 955 HA. In the meantime this has grown to 3,156 HA in 2011.
 
The harvest yield per hectare in Lower Saxony was about 8.6 tons in 1997. In 2011 this was 12.1 tons per hectare. Top years such as 2007 even yielded 15.6 tons of strawberries per hectare.
