Avocado exports from Lambayeque (Peru) decreased by 23.6% between January and April 2012, a period in which the total FOB value was USD 924,000, while in the same period of 2011 was of USD 1.2 million, according to statistics from the Research and Information Unit of the Regional Association of Exporters - AREX Lambayeque, calculated with figures from Infotrade Foreign Trade.
Export volumes came down only 3.6%, from 525 MT exported in the first quarter of 2011, to 506 MT during the same period of this year.
In the AREX Lambayeque report, we can also observe this fall in avocado remittances, although in the first 4 months of the year it was sold for $ 1.70 per kg, ie more than 2011 which was sold at $0.1, placing it at an average price of $ 1.60 the Kg.
The main destination for the avocado was Holland with 90% is followed by Spain with 9%, then France and Switzerland, which share the remaining 1% of total exports.
However, the specialist from AREX, Carlos Ypanaqué Estrada, revealed that statistics show that the U.S. (world's largest avocado importer), has not received Lambayeque remittances for over 3 years, "their avocado exports go to Holland," currently considered to be the country with second largest global demand for this fruit, and whose growth rate over the past 5 years has been 13% in FOB value, and 14% in volume, well above the global average of 10% and 6% respectively
