AU: Senate to scrutinise Malaysian pineapple agreement

The recent decision to allow Malaysian pineapples into Australia is going to be scrutinised by a Senate inquiry, it has been announced.

Biosecurity Australia recently gave the go ahead to the import of de-crowned pineapples, causing alarm within the domestic industry over the possibility of bacterial infection reaching Australian shores.

Queensland Nationals Senator Ron Boswell says growers have every right to be concerned.

"The umpire makes a decision. We live in a free country where you can question that decision and this is an opportunity for them to express their concerns and ask their questions," he said.

"We will interview Biosecurity and AQIS and make sure the provisions they've laid down are adequate to prevent the disease from coming into Australia."
