US (CA): Squash off to a good start

With harvesting of squash picking up across California last week, growers are predicting a season with good production.

“The weather has been cooperative, so quality has been excellent,” said Jeff Halfpenny, sales manager for Talley Farms in Arroyo Grande, California. “Time will tell how the season will progress, but we're hoping the weather stays the same.” If the weather does hold, Halfpenny predicts production will be good.

“The plants looks fine,” he said. “Looks like we'll have good volume, good production.” He added that prices have been decent so far, and he hopes they remain so into September when harvest typically wraps up. For now, there have been no surprises this season, with production and quality on par with previous seasons.

“Quality is excellent, volume is good and the market is decent,” said Halfpenny. “Everything looks as it normally does.”
