UK: Sainsbury’s reveals ‘best-ever’ record for British apples and pears

Sainsbury’s has broken its own record for the number of British grown apples sold in the season, with customers picking up over 38,000 thousand tonnes equating to 300 million apples. It’s anticipated that a further 11 million apples will fly off the shelves as Braeburn and Bramley apples continue to represent the home-grown season.

Despite the unpredictable weather seen across the UK from the warmest March to the wettest April, apple orchards across Kent are already in bloom and "buzzing with pollinating insects". Discovery, traditionally the earliest red dessert apple will mark the start of the new season with apples available in-store as early as August.

Theresa Huxley, Sainsbury’s apple and pears expert, said: "It’s great to see that customers are enjoying our British apples and are eating more than ever before. Customers demand for British grown fruit is really giving our growers the confidence to plant more and our buyers the confidence to buy more.

"Working with our growers and by establishing a concept orchard to develop new varieties, we’re able to extend the British season and provide more home-grown apples up and down the UK and make a great step towards our 2020 commitment to double British food sales.

"As the British apple and pear season draws to an end, planning and preparation for the next season is already underway in our orchard. We would encourage customers to look-out for a bumper summer of British grown products this year from asparagus, blueberries, curly lettuce, tomatoes and lettuce through to strawberries and melons.”
