UK: Strawberries fit for a Queen

200 kilos of strawberries will be delivered to Buckingham Palace in June. British Summer Fruits represents over 90% of the UK's soft fruit growers and is cultivating a special crop of the same variety of strawberries - Royal Sovereign - that were served at the Queen's coronation banquet in 1953, to mark this year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Royal Sovereign variety strawberry was first cultivated in 1892 and became popular in the 1950s and 1960s.

However, in more recent years the variety has all but disappeared from cultivation, as more modern varieties have been developed.

The crop has all but disappeared from our fields, edged out by hardier varieties.

British strawberry growers are also lending their support to Breast Cancer Care's Strawberry Tea summer fund-raising initiative.

The charity is asking people to host strawberry-themed tea parties between June 1 and August 31 to raise funds.
