Ahold sees promise in Belgium

Dutch retailer Royal Ahold NV is seeing "promising results" in Belgium and aims to have 50 stores there by 2017, Chief Executive Dick Boer said This week.

Ahold currently operates three supermarkets in Belgium and wants to expand to 10 stores there this year, Boer said at the retailer's annual shareholder meeting in Amsterdam.

Last year, the company opened its first store in Belgium under its Albert Heijn format. In Belgium, Ahold faces competition from local supermarket operator Delhaize Group and France's Carrefour.
