UK: Kwiksave returns to high street

Discount chain retailer Kwiksave is returning to the UK high street five years after closing down. It appears to be sign of the times - as more and more consumers are concerned and constrained by economic factors they are turning to discount brands.

Costcutter have purchased the well known brand and have opened the first store in Greater Manchester.

Discount retailers including Wilkinson, Pound Stretcher and 99p Stores are amongst the top ten independent grocery retailers and their growth mirrors the rise of the big cut-price supermarket chains such as Aldi and Lidl.

It is in stark contrast to the impact the downturn has had on the rest of the retail sector. In badly-affected areas of Britain, more than one in five shops is boarded up, according to a recent report from the Local Data Company.

The new launch of the budget chain could see it thrive in this climate.

The senior management behind the new Kwiksave will use the greater Manchester opening to test the water for a possible wider launch nationwide.

There are some differences in the return of the brand - it used to be Kwik Save and is now to be known as Kwiksave.
