Start of Southern European stonefruit season

Netherlands: First Huelva nectarines at Zoutewelle

Today, April 11 is the kickoff of the new stone fruit season at Zoutewelle Import BV, The Netherlands . "The first nectarines Alfonseca from Huelva, start our extensive Southern European (stone) fruit program. We will offer these nectarines until the end of April. Covered production of mainly white coloured flesh varieties. Alfonseca has 50 ha nectarines and peaches 10 ha under plastic. 1 May sees the start of production in 'open air' of yellow-fleshed varieties on a total area of 150 ha."

"Due to the cold period in January at the beginning of the blossom period the availability of early stone fruit is generally more limited in southern Spain, but we ensure that our customers shall want for nothing," said Jack Bezemer of Zoutewelle.

"On May 10 to 15 the Murcia region is expected to start with peaches, nectarines and apricots, plums follow about a week later. Regions Badajoz & Lerida follow afterwards."

"With our quality suppliers in all regions, we hope this year again to optimally serve our customers. For each destination and each customer, retail and wholesale, we have the correct size, correct colour and quality in the right packaging."

"Also for re-export, we expect plenty of opportunities in peaches, plums and nectarines. Several Eastern European production countries are dealing with frost damage," said Jack.
