NZ: First Zespri kiwifruit on waves

The first 2012 shipment of Zespri kiwifruit is leaving the port of Tauranga today. It is heading for Japan and it contains 800,000 trays of Zespri Gold.

This year's harvest is expected to reach 20 million trays of gold (hort 16a) kiwifruit.

Zespri general manager of supply chain, Sally Gardiner says Zespri’s first charter ship for the 2012 season was partly loaded in Gisborne on Sunday, with kiwifruit from the Poverty Bay region and will complete loading in Tauranga today, before departing for Japan.

Sally says early season demand indications are good in Japan, Zespri's biggest market.

The expectation is that Zespri will charter 50 ships over the next 30 weeks, to carry their fruit to markets in Asia and Europe.

The first shipment bound for Europe is scheduled to leave port at the end of the week.
