Taste of the Sea, Heritage and Inspired Range

UK: Westland Nurseries develop new range

Westland Nurseries emerging from traditional salad and leaf growing during the 60's and 70's have developed into one of the largest commercial growers of cut micro-leaf and speciality products.

Ruby Chard

Westlands started the journey into growing baby leaf salad products during 2000, moving very quickly into Micro Leaf Salads and herbs.

The Westlands Micro Leaf selection are the young versions of herbs or salad leaves harvested at seed leaf or first true leaf stage and include amaranth, pea shoots, coriander and basil as well as many more.

Westland has now further developed a new range aimed at top chefs and the catering industry.

The Westlands Inspired Range contains more unusual and unique range of produce including an unusual range of plants some of which have their origins as foraged plants such as edible flowers, bronze fennel, buckler sorrel and nasturtium leaves.

Westlands Taste of the Sea is a range of sea vegetables rich in nutrients and vitamins. this range includes samphire, sea aster, okahijiki, sea fennel, sea buckshorn and sea kale.

The Westlands Heritage Range is a range of heirloom varieties which used to commonly be grown but these days are rarely seen. According to Westlands' Simon Coles it has to be "weird and wonderful" to be in the Heritage range. It includes varieties such as White Wonder, Gourmet Yellow, Roman Candle and Tigerella. The team at Westlands are currently working on further products to add to this range.

Sea Kale

The launch of the Inspired Range will be at the end of April, with the Taste of Sea range hitting the market in May. This will be followed by the Heritage Range at the end of May. To begin with all of these vegetables will be available on the UK market and at The Rungis wholesale market in Paris, there are plans to launch the products further into main line Europe in the near future.
