Valle del Sur sends 20,100 tons

Mexico exports more vegetables to the U.S.

Gerardo Diaz de Zavala , manager of the agricultural company Valle del Sur, reports that in the current 2011-2012 season, which began in November and ends in May, the have already exported 20,100 tons of vegetables to the United States.

Currently, Diaz de Zavala says that they are working in an area of 800 hectares and they aim to achieve a volume of export of 27,300 tons at the end of the season. In this regard, he points out that the company has 1,050 employees who harvest green cucumber, squash, eggplant, cucumbers, and green beans.

Among the plans for this year is to finish preparing the surface of 270 hectares, that were purchased last year, to leave them ready to be planted for the 2012-2013 season. "It is a difficult task that requires a heavy investment of human capital and money" he stresses. To be able to work on the new surface, two 150 meters wells, were drilled for irrigation. "Also amongst our plans, is to acquire an area of 300 hectares to be put in production for the 2013-2014 cycle. As you can see the company is working on two fronts: one is the every day work with the planting and harvesting of vegetables, and the other one is in the preparation of new land, as well as in the legal part in the acquisition of new surfaces. Last seasonĀ“s production was very positive for the company, because 25,000 tons in 1,220 containers were exported and we had a very good market. This year we planted a larger area and expect to exceed the export volume."
