UK: Lidl to build new depot to service south central England

German discount chain Lidl are to build a new 426,000 sq ft depot in Hampshire as the supermarkets invest in their South Central distribution networks.

Lidl has applied for permission to build on a site close to the junctions of the M27 and M271 motorways, north west of Southampton.

The move follows the break down of talks with Southampton council over an alternative site in Portswood.

The depot at Brownhill Way, would serve central southern England from Dorset to East Sussex and Berkshire.

Southampton City Council and Test Valley Borough council are expected to make a decision later this spring.

Supermarket chains are investing heavily in upgraded distribution networks in the South Central area.

Tesco has won permission for a 120,000 sq ft distribution hub at Crawley, serving south west London and Sussex as part of their online delivery service.

Last week Sainsbury disclosed that they were to occupy a 680,000 sq ft distribution centre at Houndmills, Basingstoke.
