"Sweden to build vertical "farm of the future"

Swedish company, Plantagon, have recently broken ground on their first vertical greenhouse project in Linköping. The project is a futuristic attempt to provide a solution for cleaner living in inner city areas, at the same time as providing food for growing urban populations.

The idea is to create a vertical greenhouse within city spaces, building upwards to minimise space requirements.

The greenhouses are envisaged at boosting environmentally friendly living in two ways - for one thing there would be less need for transportation of foods as they will be produced in the areas most densely populated and also, the high concentration of vegetation in the urban areas could act as an air filtration system.

A similar idea has already been seen in Italy where apartment blocks have been built using "vertical forests." There are apartment blocks containing living tress that serve as insulation and for air filtrations.
