AU: Woolworths launches virtual supermarket

Woolworths Ltd has launched a ‘virtual supermarket’ at a train station in Sydney, mirroring similar efforts by retailers in South Korea and Singapore. The move comes just days after Australia’s largest retailer unveiled an expanded version of its ‘Woolworths App’, which now allows local consumers to shop for groceries using their mobile phones.

The virtual supermarket is being displayed on the walls of Town Hall Station in central Sydney, and allows customers to view and buy products using their mobile devices, which are then home-delivered for a fee. The virtual supermarket will feature more than 120 of the company’s most popular products across all categories.

Tjeerd Jegen, Woolworths’ Director of Supermarkets, noted: “The virtual supermarket wall is just one idea we are working on to make our customers’ lives easier”. He added: “The virtual supermarket will be at Town Hall for a week and we will take feedback from customers throughout this time. This experience will provide us with important information on how we can develop this concept into the future.”
