Heavy rainfall in South Africa expected to lower macadamia nut prices
Phil Zadro started farming macadamia nuts in the northern rivers region of New South Wales almost 40 years ago, but has since expanded to Bundaberg, Emerald and South Africa.
He said production in South Africa had almost halved in the past two seasons due to drought but in the past six weeks, there had been heavy rainfall.
"Currently [they] should be producing something like 65,000 to 70,000 tonne of nut-in-shell, compared to Australia's 50,000 tonne," Mr Zadro said.
"If South Africa comes back in a big way, say next year, and they dump 30,000 tonne on your doorstep, I don't think that we are ready to absorb it all at once."
