"Australia: "The most expensive crop per cherry grown in history"

According to the president of the Cherry Growers Association of Australia, cherries grown in Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, will be the "most expensive ever grown in history". After relentless cold in the east and constant rain, the cherry season is looking grim in the region. Because of these adverse conditions and a lack of pollination spread, they are expecting around a 40 percent drop in production this year.

The low supply this year is forcing supermarkets to keep the high prices for the sought after festive fruit. Tom Eastlake, president of the Cherry Growers Association of Australia, said the situation was "unprecedented". "This will be the most expensive crop per cherry grown in history," he added.

He said he expected prices to remain at up to $20 per kilo in major supermarkets in the lead up to Christmas, but that it would test Western Australia's supply of cherries, given the low volume coming into the state from the east.
