Chile: Half of cherries exported to China

Chilean Agriculture Minister, Carlos Furche, said on Tuesday that China is the leading market for their country's cherry exports. He sees closer ties with China and further trade deals could increase the number of exports, as there is still room for the market to grow in China. Nearly half of the more than 100,000 tons produced in the country goes to China alone.

The fruit currently generates some 500 million U.S. dollars in export revenue, Furche said during a tour of a cherry plant, Agricola Garces, accompanied by China's ambassador to Chile, Li Baorong.

"Both heads of state pledged to further expand our free trade agreement, not just in trade, but also in investment, which is good news for Chilean agriculture, because the future of our food exports lies in China," said Furche.

Chile's agricultural sector is thriving and generating jobs, according to Furche. In fact, the sector employs 10 percent of the country's labor force, and even higher in the southern region of O'Higgins, where the figure reaches 25%.
