Announcement by Uruguay Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries

Quality assurance for exports to China

This week, the Uruguay Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Senor Aguerre, announced that Uruguay will actively cooperate with China to guarantee the quality of agricultural products that are exported to China. He also stated that, based on the long years of friendship between the two countries, a deep and complete collaboration will be pushed forward.

Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Tabar Aguerre

Uruguay borders Brazil in the Northeast and Argentina in the Southwest. To the Southeast, it faces the ocean. It is the smallest country in South America. The economy mostly relies on livestock, agriculture and fishing, with 90% of the countries surface being arable land. 85% of that surface is grazing land and just 4% is for cultivation, another 4% is occupied by forestry. Reportedly, in June this year an agreement was finalised related to the export of oranges and blueberries etc. from Uruguay to China. The export of Uruguay's oranges to China is based on the same method for cold storage as that of the US. For the export of blueberries on the other hand, the same cold storage technique is used for transport to China, only after a methyl bromide treatment at the place of production.

This visit was to exactly mark the 28th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Senor Aguerre pointed out that Uruguay is a country with an emphasis on agriculture. As such, Uruguay has a rigorous control system to uphold the quality of hygiene inspections. The country also has superior natural conditions, a small population, a stable economy, abundant sources of renewable energy and others. Ever since the economic growth that followed the opening-up of China, Uruguay has had a wide range of agricultural products that are continuously exported to China.
