Costa Rica finds its niche as Brazil tries to extend its melon season

The Costa Rican melon season lasts from January until April. Ricardo Garron of Melones del Sol has 18 years of experience in melons, and only sees competition increasing. “Our season starts after Spain and Brazil, and is at the same time as the Honduran season. The Brazilian season seems to last longer each year. They continue trying to increase their window.”

“Smaller companies are more flexible”
“We started the company when Dole established a program to export melons from Costa Rica. When they withdrew the program, we focused on European countries and expanded the number of buyers. Melones del Sol’s main buyers are in the Netherlands, which then distribute the fruit to all of Europe and the UK."

"Being a small company, we can quickly respond to changes in demand and provide additional focus on quality checks. Switching rapidly is much more difficult for large companies and thus we’ve found the niche that allows us to continue operating. Adaptation to new varieties, specific client requirements and personalized attention, high quality standards, quick response to changes in the market, strong social and environmental concerns; that is the strength of small companies.”

Being positive
Ricardo Garron and Marbeth Venegas founded Melones del Sol in 1998. The company has an area of 150 hectares and produces Yellow Honey Dew Melons and Piel de Sapo. According to him, prices were reasonable last year. “Two years ago they were very low. Each season is different, and we hope 2017 will be positive again, naturally. If we are not positive we can not be growers.”
