For one hundred modernising entrepreneurs, from the small and medium-sized enterprises, it will be an exciting day. Today, it will be announced that SME has been awarded first place in the 2016 Innovation Top 100 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
One of the contenders for the top spot is LiquidSeal from Leiden. Citrus from South Africa and Argentina, mangoes from Brazil or papayas from Colombia sometimes take three to four weeks to arrive. During that long journey it would be best if the ripening process of the fruit was paused, as it were. That is possible thanks to the invention of LiquidSeal.
Manager, Victor Monster, said, “We have developed a biodegradable polymer. That is a layer which is applied, by spraying or immersion, to perishable fruit that has a hard skin, such as mangoes or avocados. That breathable film ensures less oxygen reaches the product, which is how we extend shelf life.”
Monster says it will not cause health problems, because hardly any of the polymer reaches the fruit itself. “Research has shown that you would have to eat at least 500 mangoes before any harm might occur.”
