Onion exports are currently performing very well. "I have rarely seen such volumes leaving in August. Several colleagues are also indicating that export volumes are much higher than normal, especially in the last 2-3 weeks," said Lindert Moerdijk of MSP Onions. "This is also incredibly important for packers, because the last period has cost money. After weeks of decline, the export price has been stable for 2-3 weeks now. There is even starting to be movement, as destinations are still being added weekly."

"Because we are now below 25 cents on exports, all destinations are active again. Even Europe is still taking onions particularly well, while Africa is really buying at full pace now. Personally, I am especially positive about the fact that Asia is also cautiously back on the scene, which means we can have really strong export weeks," Lindert continued.

Good margin on free trade
"The grower price, fortunately, remains at a level between 11 and 14, depending on quality. For us, the onion grower is the engine that has to pull the wagon. We have to be careful with that engine. It is important for the future that we can maintain a decent price even when the harvest is excellent. Between grower and exporter, there is now a good margin on free trade."
"The price of contract cultivation is actually a bit too high in combination with the current export price, but that is the risk of the trade and possibly also the motivation of packers to get the most out of it now. In recent years, it was often good for the packer, and now it is not great, so let's not complain too much," Lindert observed.

Next week, on its own initiative, MSP is organising an information evening at Nieuwdorp village hall to present its new plans. "As MSP considers the interests of the village very important, this evening is to inform everyone in detail and explain the new situation," he said. MSP Platinum is currently in the engineering and development phase. The building is now fixed and can be presented. Construction is expected to start in late 2025 or early 2026. "This project really gives me a boost of energy. Huge strides are going to be made compared to MSP Gold in terms of various techniques like AI, machine learning, Eqontrol, and therefore definitely in terms of quality and capacity!"
