Malaysia's strategic efforts in pineapple exportation are directed at addressing New Zealand's request for expanded shipments of the tropical fruit. The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM), under the guidance of its chairman, Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, considers this development a strategic step to broaden Malaysia's export footprint. The focus is on ensuring a continuous supply of quality pineapples that meet global standards, in response to international demand, including from New Zealand.
The LPNM is collaborating with related agencies to evaluate Malaysia's readiness to meet New Zealand's import requirements. Initiatives include increasing pineapple planting areas in partnership with state governments, an effort to bolster the country's pineapple production capability. The board emphasizes enhancing supply chain management, food quality, safety, and cross-agency collaboration.
During a visit to New Zealand, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi highlighted New Zealand's keen interest in greater pineapple imports, viewing it as a potential market expansion. Trial export studies conducted in October 2024 and June 2025 reported favorable feedback on Malaysian pineapple downstream products, such as frozen pineapple cubes and dried chunks, in New Zealand markets.
In 2024, Malaysia exported 30,735 tons of pineapple-based products, valued at RM1.73 billion (US$368 million), while fresh pineapple exports reached 11,633 tons, generating approximately RM23.07 million (US$4.9 million). The primary markets include China, Singapore, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates.
