Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) remained stable in the second half of May, registering a marginal decline of just $1 to settle at $655 per 40-foot container. Despite this minor dip, some of the underlying route-specific indices saw double-digit fluctuations, reflecting ongoing variability within individual trade lanes.
The IACI, a weighted average of spot container freight rates across 18 key intra-Asia routes, remains 11 percent higher year-on-year. Drewry expects freight rates across the region to stay generally stable over the coming month, with no major shifts anticipated in the short term.
The index captures actual spot market rates and is updated fortnightly. It includes major shipping corridors between cities such as Busan, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Kaohsiung, Laem Chabang, Manila, Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, Yokohama, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port, among others. These routes cover a comprehensive network of intra-Asia trade connections, with Shanghai serving as the central hub for the majority of movements.
By offering insights into rate trends on individual routes as well as a composite average, the IACI serves as a valuable benchmark for shippers, freight forwarders, and carriers navigating the region's dynamic logistics environment.
