According to data prepared by Hortoinfo, in 2021, worldwide tomato exports amounted to 7,767.26 million kilos. Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, and Morocco accounted for 53.16% of the world's tomato exports. Mexico exported 24.51% of the total, the Netherlands 12.02%, Spain 8.53%, and Morocco 8.10% of the world total.
However, not all have experienced the same evolution in recent years. According to data from COMTRADE, Mexico has gone from exporting 1,472.39 million kilos of tomatoes in 2012 to 1,903.78 in 2021 (+29.3%). In the same period of time, the Netherlands went from exporting 1,039.6 million kilos to 933.71 million kilos (-10.19%), Spain from 908.65 to 662.49 (-27.09%), and Morocco went from exporting 443.81 million kilos of tomatoes in 2012 to exporting 629.51 million kilos in 2021 (+41.84%).
Destinations
Mexico shipped almost all of its tomato exports (99.77%.) to the US.
The Netherlands exported 396.55 million kilos of tomatoes to Germany, 142.76 million kilos to the United Kingdom, 58.93 million kilos to Poland, 58.63 million kilos to Sweden, and 41.85 million kilos to Italy.
The largest customer for Spanish tomatoes was Germany with 187.23 million kilos. It was followed by France with 100.18 million kilos, the Netherlands with 71.52 million kilos, the United Kingdom with 70.73 million, and Poland with 48.93 million kilos.
The main destination for the Moroccan tomato was France with 334.42 million kilos, followed by the United Kingdom with 104.74 million kilos, Spain with 58.36 million kilos, the Netherlands with 56.07 million kilos, and Mauritania with 29.63 million kilos.
