Peruvian asparagus exports to Europe increase

In the 2021 campaign, Peru shipped approximately 10 million kilos of fresh asparagus and 3 million kilos of frozen asparagus. That year, there was an interesting increase in the European market's share in shipments.

“We maintained the sales level of frozen and fresh asparagus in 2020 and 2021. Peru's participation in the European fresh asparagus market has increased by 30%," said Lionel Arce Orbegozo, general manager of the Complejo Agroindustrial Beta.

70% of Peruvian asparagus goes to the United States. However, Complejo Agroindustrial Beta sends only 30% of the vegetable to the United States, 30% to England, 20% to Spain, and the remaining 20% to various destinations.

According to Lionel Arce, distant markets, such as Asia, are not as attractive as conventional markets because they aren't as profitable due to the increase in labor and air freight costs.

When asked why there has been a certain stagnation in the growth of production and areas dedicated to the cultivation of asparagus in recent years, he said it was because of the increase in labor costs and the supply chain.

Another factor, he said, is that the Peruvian Promotion Commission for Export and Tourism (Promperú) is no longer carrying out actions to promote the asparagus in the world. Unfortunately, most of the promotional activities have been suspended and postponed due to the lack of platforms, such as fairs and face-to-face business meetings due to the pandemic, he stated.
