Stella Rasmussen on the production of sugar snaps and other products in Kenya:

"This year, we will build new farms that will allow us to increase our production power"

"We will be building new company-owned facilities this year to increase our production capacity," Stella Rasmussen, managing director of the Meerbusch-based company of the same name, tells us. "Demand for EU pulses and peas remains good. However, due to weather fluctuations, product quantities and qualities remain a challenge. Initially, there was too much rain and now we are experiencing hot weather. We mainly ship to Europe and South Africa. Our goal is to increase tonnage per week in the near future."

The sugar snaps undergo extensive quality assurance and inspection.

Company expansion
"We will also build new farms this year that will allow us to increase our production power. Therefore, I can also announce that we will soon have a new director on our team." She also said she has been able to find new growing sites for her avocado production and will be ramping up her production in this product, for which the farm will be relocated to a larger area. "Certainly when it comes to food safety, I'm glad we've also invested more in our own growing farms." Rasmussen also sees advantages here in the fact that production can be inspected more effectively accordingly, thereby ensuring food safety.

In the meantime, logistics are causing problems, especially with regard to air freight, because there are fewer flights and many cancellations. Compared to Europe, she said, there are far fewer Covid-infected people in Kenya, which means restaurants and pubs were open weeks earlier than elsewhere. "We also want to start selling new products in the future, namely different types of tea and coffee," Rasmussen concludes.

Stella Rasmussen will be back at Fruit Logistica in Berlin this year.
