Del Monte France switches to compostable banana stickers

Del Monte France is switching to plastic-free, compostable stickers for all its bananas sold in France. This way, the French branch of the Fresh Del Monte group shows its intention to strengthen its commitment to sustainable development.

The stickers meet the French criteria for home composting (NF T 51-800) and they also comply with the anti-waste law for a circular economy (AGEC, n° 2020-105 Article 80). Certified “OK compost HOME”, these new stickers guarantee that their components - adhesive, material and inks - do not have any negative impact on the environment. They also meet all the food safety requirements of the European Union. “Del Monte is one of the first major brands in France to offer this sustainable alternative on one of France’s favorite fruits,” explains Eric Hellot, president and director of Del Monte France SAS.

These new stickers can be found on the different varieties of bananas (Cavendish, Mini, Plantain), the different origins (Costa Rica, Ecuador…) and the different certifications (Grown sustainably SCS Global Services, Organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance).

Although composting is nature’s way of recycling natural waste, the stickers should not be discarded in nature, but in an environment designed for this purpose. In a compost bin, the right amount of dry materials (or brown waste like twigs or paper) and wet materials (or green waste like cut grass, fruit pits) guarantees its transformation into useful matter. And if you don’t have a compost bin, the trashcan or sorting container will do.

Fresh Del Monte, a sustainable and resilient company
These new stickers are a logical extension of the global Fresh Del Monte policy. The company wants to reduce the quantity of plastic used to a minimum, facilitate recycling and find the means to reduce plastic waste so it does not end up at landfills, in the sea or the ocean. For several years, Del Monte has been investing in new materials and rethinking the existing ones.

The company wants to reduce by 25% the use of virgin plastic in consumer packaging by 2025, use only 100% recyclable plastic packaging by 2030, double the quantity of recycled materials in its secondary packaging by 2026, double the amount of crates made of returnable plastic (RPC) by 2027 and make sure that at least 65% of the shipping boxes purchased worldwide are certified for responsible sourcing (FSC, PEFC or SFI) by 2023.
