Nepal destroys seven vegetable shipments from India over pesticide toxicity

According to agricultural authorities in Kathmandu, high levels of pesticides were found in seven vegetables. The vegetables were either destroyed or quarantined in the previous two and a half months.

Although the Green Revolution resulted in the large-scale use of pesticides and synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, the system failed as there have been little or no efforts to educate farmers about the high risk associated with the intensive use of pesticides. The price that farmers have paid for food security includes cancer, renal failure, stillborn babies and birth defects.

Recently, Nepal authorities either destroyed or quarantined consignments of vegetables imported from India in the previous two and a half months. Seven varieties of green vegetables, including beans and gourds, were destroyed and eleven others quarantined after excessive amounts of pesticides were found in them.
