According to the third estimate made by the Chilean table grape sector, the country will export 64,582,046 boxes of 8.2 kilos in the 2020-2021 season are projected to be reached, stated the President of ASOEX, Ronald Bown Fernandez.
“We have been working hard to have a better evaluation of our table grape exports, especially after the high level of rainfall and some hailstorms that affected some producing areas. We project we'll export more than 64 million boxes of table grapes in the 2020-2021 season, i.e. 12 percent less than in the 2019-2020 season and 3 percent less than the more than 66 million boxes forecast in the second estimate of last February," Bown stated.
"This third forecast is the best estimate we can have to date. We hope that, as time passes, this projection does not diminish,” he added.
The President of ASOEX also said this third forecast was 22% lower (17.8 million boxes less) than the first estimate made by the sector in December 2020, which -prior to the rains in January of this year- projected the county would export 82,309,644 boxes.
Bown also highlighted that this third estimate was made with information provided by 38 companies, which together account for 59% of the volume exported last season (2019-2020).
Bown said that the main losses took place in white varieties. The country expects to export 14,209,141 boxes of green grapes, 5,656,395 boxes of black grapes, 28,500,373 boxes of red grapes, and 16,216,138 boxes of Red Globe grapes.
