Rik Decadt, REO Veiling:

"Growers have worked very hard to guarantee the supply of vegetables"

At REO Veiling, the supply of open ground vegetables is currently going well, despite cold temperatures this week. According to production director Rik Decadt, growers responded en masse to the approaching frost last weekend. “On Saturday and Sunday, when it wasn't freezing too hard, the growers started to cover the products in the field or harvest the products and bring them to the refrigerated storage. Because the growers worked so hard, everything was cleared on time and we have a larger supply of leeks this week than in the week before. ”

“Growers worked all weekend, to ensure that we don't have shortages this week. And they succeeded,” says Rik. “At the moment there are mainly leeks still in the fields and a little bit of sprouts. Leeks can be harvested, stored and prepared in advance, that is the advantage of leeks. You cannot harvest Brussels sprouts when frost is on the way. For these products you have to wait for the thawing period. Covering the leek fields helps to protect those leeks that are left on the land from extremely low temperatures. Covering the leeks is a time-consuming job, but the growers' hard work ensures that we can continue to eat tasty leeks for the coming weeks.”
