Larger Australian nectarines on the Chinese market than last year

Imported nectarines on the Chinese market mainly come from Australia, Chile, the USA, and Spain. This is the time of year when Australian nectarines enter the Chinese market in large volumes. Their flavor is very good this year. The nectarines also arrived earlier than last year and their product quality is better. Furthermore, the average size is bigger this year.

Australian nectarines

"Australia is a developed country and the labor cost is relatively high. That is why the price of Australian nectarines is high. The price of large Australian nectarines is around 320-360 yuan [49.37-55.54 USD] per 10 kg net weight. Customs clearance briefly slowed down as a result of strained trade relations between China and Australia, and this had an effect on the import volume and price of Australian nectarines. Fortunately the trade relations returned to normal and customs clearance resumed as usual. However, the import volume of Australian nectarines so far is much smaller than last year." This is according to Chen Zhiwei of Guangzhou New Origin Fresh Import & Export Co., Ltd.

Although China is a large producer of nectarines, the Chinese production season mirrors that of Australia. Chinese and Australian nectarines do not enter the market at the same time. The main competition for Australian nectarines comes from the Chilean nectarines that arrive on the Chinese market in March and April. The production volume of Chilean nectarines is huge and their price is much lower than the price of Australian nectarines. One box of 9 kg net weight costs around 120-130 yuan [18.51-20.06 USD]. That is a very reasonable price for nectarines. However, regardless of origin, white nectarines sell better than yellow nectarines.

"Australia produces a wide variety of nectarines, but the difference between them is difficult to tell from their appearance alone. Some varieties have a higher sugar content, different flavor, or difference in firmness. We import many different varieties such as Snow Flare, Diamond Pearl, Majestic Pearl, Giant Pearl, Summer Pearl, and Regal Pearl. We import nectarines from Australia and sell them under our brand 'Sunny Boy' in first- and second-tier wholesale markets in Guangzhou and Shanghai. From there the nectarines are distributed throughout the country. We also sell a small volume via e-commerce platforms," said Mr. Chen Zhiwei.
