The Chilean kiwi season is on its final stretch. Chile has exported 136,514 tons of Chilean kiwi to the different world markets by week 33-34. The European Union stands out as the main destination for this fruit with 52,657 tons (39% of the total), i.e. 20% more than in the same period of 2019.
It is followed by Latin America with 26,101 tons (19% of the total), the Far East with 24,380 tons (18%), North America with 20,190 tons (15%), the Middle East with 6,745 tons, and Russia with 6,441 tons (both destinations with a 5 % of the total).
The Hayward kiwi was the main exported variety with a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by the Jintao variety with 1.4% of the total.
According to Carlos Cruzat, the president of the Chilean Kiwi Committee, there still is Chilean kiwi that can be exported, but its export depends on the truckers' strike. There is also cargo to be shipped to neighboring Latin American countries.
